The Artist has been nominated in 10 categories at the 2012 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, marking a first for French cinema.
Michel Hazanavicius's film has received nominations in the major categories of Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay, Actor in a Leading Role for Jean Dujardin, and Actress in a Supporting Role for Bérénice Béjo. This is the first time in the history of the Academy Awards that a French film has received such a large number of nominations. It is also worth noting that a silent film has not picked up the Oscar for Best Film since 1929.
