The Artist has been nominated in 10 categories at the 2012 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, marking a first for French cinema.
Michel Hazanavicius's film has received nominations in the major categories of Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay, Actor in a Leading Role for Jean Dujardin, and Actress in a Supporting Role for Bérénice Béjo. But the list does not end there, with additional nominations for Best Original Music (Ludovic Bource), Art Direction (Laurence Bennett), Cinematography (Guillaume Schiffman), Film Editing (Anne-Sophie Bion), and Costume Design (Mark Bridges).
This is the first time in the history of the Academy Awards that a French film has received such a large number of nominations. It is also worth noting that a silent film has not picked up the Oscar for Best Film since 1929.
In other good news, A Cat in Paris by Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Animated Film category.
