On 9 November, Claire Denis presented her film White Material to students of the Columbia University School of the Arts. The students packed out the university's screening room to see the film.
The director then responded to the students' many questions, accompanied by Kent Jones, one of Film Comment magazine's senior film critics.
The masterclass given by Denis to second, third, and fourth year students was a resounding success. She spoke with precision about her work with the actors of Good Work, Friday Night. and Chocolat, the three films that the students participating in the class had seen and were studying.
The encounter lasted three hours under the leadership of Bette Gordon, who is herself a film director and also the Dean of the Cinema Department at Columbia University.
