A study has been initiated on international sales of French short films, aimed at highlighting the dynamism of a market previously difficult to monitor.
This analysis reveals a marked rise in revenues (up by over €40,000 between 2004 and 2006). These figures reflect not only a constant expansion of the market, but also indicate the increasingly significant role played by operators in this sector in the monitoring of statistics.
Results for 2007 confirm this trend. After 2004, in which net receipts stood at €73,000, and 2006, in which the figures did not exceed €115,000, international sales of French short films reached €300,000 in 2007. This figure, based on statements reported by Unifrance members, does not, however, reflect the full scale of film sales, and we can estimate with reasonable certainty that receipts for 2007 came close to the €500,000 mark.
Nonetheless, out of concern for accuracy, the study bases its findings only on objective results provided to Unifrance by production and distribution companies.
The study compiles a list of French short film sales in international markets in 2007. Films broadcast on French television channels in foreign territories are therefore not taken into consideration. Films programmed by Canal+ France outside France, as well as films acquired by Arte network are not considered in the study; however an exception was made to include sales deals with TV5 Monde.
The year in which films were produced is not a consideration in this study, with the only condition required being that the film’s acquisition must have been completed in 2007.
