Our sixth digital market news summary, which can be downloaded below (reserved for UniFrance members), is devoted to events in the digital distribution market in July and August 2021.
In the wake of 2020, a year marked by the proliferation of hybrid releases, we are seeing new chronologies put in place by the distribution media, notably in the USA. Faced with increasing competition, digital platforms are seeking to forge new distribution partnerships and transform user practices so as to reach new audiences. On their side, public authorities are introducing new legislation to regulate the VOD sector.
The new distribution practices that began at the start of the Covid health crisis have now moved beyond the experimental stage: in the USA, studios have been gradually reducing theatrical distribution windows in favor of increased VOD release, very often to the benefit of their own platforms. The exclusive release of content increases each month, becoming a component of major importance for digital platforms in a market in which competition is growing fast. Even so, government authorities continue their initiatives to regulate the sector in order to preserve the financial balance of the movie industry and its various stakeholders.
