Koh Mei Lee, CEO of Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), which is Malaysia's leading exhibitor with 36 movie theaters and 340 screens, was conferred the rank of Knight (Chevalier) of France's National Order of Merit by Roland Galharague, French Ambassador to Malaysia, on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, in Kuala Lumpur.
This honor has been conferred to Ms. Koh in recognition of her long-standing commitment to French culture and French cinema. Since her appointment at the helm of this cinema chain in 2002, GSC theaters have hosted the annual French Film Festival organized by the French Embassy and the Alliance Française. This event is now held in five cities across Malaysia and in 2019 attracted more than 6,000 spectators. Ms. Koh also created the GSC International Screens Label, which allows for the commercial distribution of around twelve films by international directors in a number of the exhibitor's multiplexes every year.
One of these sites, the Mid Valley complex in Kuala Lumpur—one of the largest multiplexes in Asia, boasting 21 screens—welcomed a delegation of French exporters in the summer of 2019 as part of a study trip and a regional film market in Kuala Lumpur organized by UniFrance. In the fall of last year, GSC Movies, the company's distribution arm, orchestrated the release of The Specials in 23 theaters, just before the Covid pandemic forced theaters to close after the film had only been on screens for a few days.
For the 2021-22 season, GSC cinemas will present, in collaboration with the Alliance Française, a monthly program of French films from the catalog of the Institut Français.
Furthermore, the GSC Movies acquisition team participates in the major international film markets and events organized by UniFrance.
