Synopsis
The film begins with a short play by August Strindberg, introduction to the "The Inferno". It tells of the rivalry between God and Lucifer. God puts man on Earth for his own amusement. His creatures take themselves for gods; yet in reality, it is God who takes pleasure in seeing their fighting, and vanity. In suggesting to Adam and Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit, Lucifer wants to enlighten their ignorance, and show them the real designs of the God who had created them. Men discover the reality of their condition, good and evil. Thus, they may choose between the two; they accede to freedom. Should we trust God or Lucifer; where is good, where is evil?

About
"My meeting with Monteiro was overwhelming and grandiose, as wonderful and even more spellbinding than the swagger of John Wayne. With pleasure, I discovered the mysteries of creation in sound and light, in word and image, as well as that great family of artists which people the cinema of Joao César, a unique family in the history of art, weary of lofty isolation. Magic, folly, emotion, knowledge of new insights; new codes areetched in the spirit: the talent and genius of Monteiro. Such reconciliation with cinema is thanks to creators such as he." (Pierre Clémenti)
