Synopsis
In 1796, during the Directorate, the courier bringing seven million francs to Bonaparte's army in Italy is attacked by five bandits, four of whom are arrested shortly afterwards. Suspected of being the fifth bandit, a man is mistakenly identified by witnesses, tried and guillotined. The affair is now seen as a classic case study in hasty, vague justice.
