Synopsis
In July 2023 the 2nd edition of a rural pride festival in the village of Chenevelles takes place. The region’s LGBT+ community, along with the mayor and his constituents, are mobilizing to ensure that this celebration resonates throughout the country. They hope to spread the word that the countryside has freed itself from stereotypes.
The idea was born at a cocktail party between Mayor Cyril Cibert, a married homosexual father of two, and Etienne Deshoulières, a lawyer with the Stop Homophobie association. They had a crazy idea: their own rural Pride, in Chenevelles please! They laughed a lot, and the idea finally caught on! The Fiertés Rurales association was born. The event exceeded 700 participants. Farmers lent their tractors, locals created floats, children made banners. Enough to question the acceptance of LGBTQIA+ people in the countryside where, not so long ago, they had to hide. Times are changing. While LGBTQIA+ acts are on the rise, it is mainly in cities, leaving rural areas less affected. “The city, which used to be seen as an obligatory passage for a personal coming-out, is no longer a protective space”.
