Who Cares ?
Synopsis
Medical students and experienced care workers take part in medical simulations. Faced with comedians portraying patients, they learn to speak the right words, reflect on their reactions, and build a caring practice. The trainers debrief these sessions and point out the gender, class and racial stereotypes that shape students’ worldview and their approach to the medical examination. Between them, they discuss their own reactions and exchange, invariably, on their working conditions, inextricably linked to their potential violence. With a shortage of time and human resources, how can we still respect their humanity and that of the men and women in their care? Together, they take part in a forum theater, or Theater of the Oppressed, which mirrors the simulations. Sharing becomes caring. At the forum, they talk about burn-out, suicide, throwing in the towel. Empathy is a feeling that can be educated, but it’s also an aptitude that can be damaged under pressure.
