Synopsis
“Prisonniers de Beckett” is an encounter between two worlds that usually never meet. One consists of poetry and freedom, the other of silence and darkness.
It’s a true story that begins in a maximum security prison in Sweden, where Jan Jonson, a young actor, decides to mount a production of “Waiting for Godot” with five prisoners.
The cast’s performances are of such an unique authenticity that Beckett grants the prisoners the rights to his play and follows its progress from his Parisian home.
A feverish enthusiasm rapidly overtakes everyone: the prison director himself, a man who displays an imaginative spirit rare for someone in his position, and Jan Jonson get permission to let the five actors leave their cells to perform outside in a real theater in Göteborg. This permission is as extraordinary as the event that follows it.
“Prisonniers de Beckett” is a film-puzzle, part tragedy, part farce, which reconstructs this adventure and goes in search of its heroes to see what they’re doing today.
