About
The situation presented in the screenplay is ultimately the situation created by the movies: the state of mind of a convict after a long prison sentence is typified by exaggerated attention to the tiniest impressions, a mixture of curiosity and supersensitivity to minute events that are new or evoke memories. This intense relationship to the world is also what movies should offer but which they rarely manage to accomplish. Here, with simple means and great economy of gestures, a film manages to do so in a remarkable way.
Jean-Michel Frodon – "Le Monde," 26 August 1999
