Les Frères Gravet

    Synopsis

"They're crazy when they 're together", says one of the Gravet brother's wives about them, and she's right : the four elder brothers are dedicated to family quarrels and immoderation. When they meet up again with Michaël, their younger brother by 20 years, it's the same story. During the next 24 hours, when the brothers, wives and children get together for their mother's funeral, little by little the family secrets come out from behind all the laughter and jokes.

    About

"Ten years ago I went to see John Cassavetes in Los Angeles. I had read the script of "Love Streams" and I knew he wasn't managing to make the film. I had obtained some partnership guarantees in France, and my idea was to suggest that Cassavetes came and shot the film in Europe. I spent a wonderful, unforgettable day with him. He acted out his film to me for several hours, playing all parts and constantly moving around the living room. He took an interest in me, and when I told him I directed movies but hadn't made one in five years, he bawled me out. I solemnly swore to give up producting and go back to directing. This scene is in the credits sequence of "Les Frères Gravet", played by Seymour Cassel and Pierre Guillemot. Guillemot is an old wine-grower from Savigny-Lès-Beaune, a sort of Burgundian Raimu. The actor who was supposed to play the part of old Jean in my film had a cardiac problem the day before we started shooting and had to be replaced on the fly. I thought of Guillemot. He agreed to do a screen test. He was excellent. I saw Seymour Cassel again recently in Los Angeles and showed him the picture from the local paper : Guillemot and him, the movie's two godfathers..."
