Event presentation
CINEMANIA is dedicated to Francophone films presented in North-American, Canadian or Quebec premieres. Since its inception in 1995, it has become the annual rendez-vous of cinephiles to discover quality feature films judiciously selected by its team of programmers. Each year, more than 50 films are presented over 11 days to more than 29 000 spectators.
The Festival introduces a great number of special events: free masterclasses with directors or actors, public talks and retrospectives highlighting the work of guests of honour (Nicole Garcia, Lambert Wilson, Michel Hazanavicius, Claude Lelouch, etc.). In addition, the festival organises free outdoor screenings in Montréal parks during the summer season. In 2016 and 2017, CINEMANIA organised, in partnership with the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC), the « Rencontres Francophones », for industry professionals (280 participants).
The Mel Hoppenheim Audience Award honours the most popular film of the Festival. Among other prizes, the TFO Audience Award is dedicated to young filmmakers dealing with original subjects and highlighting new talents.
Many of the greatest names of French cinema as well as young up-and-coming talents were featured at CINEMANIA. Among them: Juliette Binoche, Emmanuelle Devos, Swann Arlaud, Anne Fontaine, Maïwenn, Adèle Haenel, Arnaud Desplechin, Laurent Lafitte, Isabelle Huppert, Tahar Rahim, Jérémie Rénier.
