Blue is the Warmest Color by Abdellatif Kechiche has won the Palme d'Or.
Steven Spielberg and his jury have announced the award winners at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival.
French films won particular favor at this year's festival, picking up a string of awards.
The director Abdellatif Kechiche, as well as his lead actresses Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos, were awarded the Palme d'Or for Blue is the Warmest Color. The film is scheduled for release in France in October and will hit movie screens in the rest of the world in 2014.
Best Actress honors went to Bérénice Bejo for her performance in The Past, the first French production by the Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi.
The "Un Certain Regard" section's award was given to the majority French production by Rithy Panh entitled The Missing Picture, which is the final installment in his trilogy on the Cambodian genocide.
The SACD Prize and the Art Cinéma Award from the Directors' Fortnight were presented to Guillaume Gallienne for his debut film Me, Myself and Mum
Also honored at the Directors' Fortnight, Tip Top by Serge Bozon received the SACD Prize Special Mention.
French cinema enjoyed a strong presence at this year's Cannes Film Festival, with a total of 35 French films, including co-productions, showcased in the various sections.
