Michel Hazanavicius's film leads the field at the BAFTA nominations, Great Britain's most prestigious film awards.
After scooping up three Golden Globes and just prior to the announcement of the Academy Award nominations, The Artist now dominates the BAFTA nominations list.
Michel Hazanavicius's film has been nominated in 12 categories, including Best Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Music, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Director, Best Leading Actor for Jean Dujardin, and Best Leading Actress for Bérénice Bejo.
The spy film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy StudioCanal, is in second place with 11 nominations. Directed by the Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, this film was adapted from a novel by John Le Carré. In third place is Hugo Cabret by Martin Scorsese, with nine nominations.
Meryl Streep has also been nominated for her performance in The Iron Lady, in which she plays the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Fresh from its Lumiere Award last week, Incendies has been nominated in the Best Film Not in the English Language category. This Canadian production was made in partnership with TS Productions in France.
The BAFTA Awards ceremony will be held February 12, 2012.
