The Hedgehog was honored with three awards at the 2009 Cairo International Film Festival, which closed its doors November 20.
The film was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize, the Pyramid for Best Director, and the Special Jury Pyramid. Mona Achache, Josiane Balasko, and Anne-Dominique Toussaint, the film’s director, actress, and producer, were present at the awards ceremony in Cairo.
The Hedgehog has been acquired by the Egyptian distributor Art, with a release planned for early 2010.
Egypt remains a limited market for French films. Less than 50,000 admissions were registered for the 8 French productions released in 2008, including 21,000 admissions for Babylon A.D. However, recent years have seen an increasing number of French film acquisitions, partly thanks to efforts made by distribution companies the Good News Group and Misr International Films.
