59th Locarno International Film Festival
This year’s Locarno International Film Festival (August 2 through 12, 2006) has a new directing committee, with Frédéric Maire as Artistic Director.
The Festival is now focusing on four sections: the International Competition, Filmmakers of the Present (which will become competitive in the future), Piazza Grande, and Play Forward. The second major change to the festival organization is a reduction by 25% in the number of films presented (170 titles are programmed this year, compared to 250 in 2005).
Desite this scaling down, French films are even better represented this year, with 17 productions and co-productions showcased in the various festival sections. This year, the Raimondo Rezzonico Award will be presented to the French collective Agat Films & Cie.
