Asterix and Obelix on the warpath in Europe
They've only just set out to conquer the old continent, and our Gaul friends have already won over more than 2.8 million European spectators!
Last weekend, "Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra" was released in Finland and Norway. Distributed by Sandrew Metronome with 27 and 42 prints released respectively, the film has registered excellent results, comparatively better than achieved by the first "Asterix." If we add the results of the film's release in Sweden, where its European campaign kicked off on February 22, it has pulled in 95,000 admissions to date in Scandinavia.
The film has also found its audience in Portugal. Distributed by Lusomundo in some 50 theaters, 180,000 spectators have already been taken in by the adventures of the Gallo-Egyptian duo. Similar success in Greece, where the film has been showing since February 1st: by the end of this week, the film should have clocked up 300,000 admissions. In Yugoslavia, another country where French films are always highly appreciated, around 12 prints are in circulation in theaters, and 85,000 admissions were recorded in the past 2 weeks.
Hopes are high for the film's results in Germany and Austria, where the first "Asterix" met with extraordinary success. Here too, the news is very good, with the million admissions threshold crossed after only 10 days on the screens. As regards our French-speaking neighbors, Belgium and Switzerland live up to expectations, with results even better than for the first "episode," which were nonetheless excellent. The distributor Alternative Films has already topped the 700,000 admissions mark, and Monopole Pathé has clocked up more than 400,000 admissions, for the Swiss French-speaking and German-speaking territories together. Upcoming release for the film is slated for the Netherlands and Slovenia on March 21.
