France ranked third and fifth respectively among the most represented foreign nationalities on foreign television channels and SVOD platforms in 2024.
Unifrance's 4th Audiovisual Report is presented in a brand new version. The traditional 10 country profiles on linear television channels are enhanced with a comprehensive analysis covering all 14 foreign countries studied. Given the increasingly porous boundaries of television exhibition, the decision was made to supplement this report with a second part devoted entirely to SVOD platforms, also consisting of an overall analysis and country profiles. The data separates films and one-off works from series, focusing on the three main genres: animation, documentary, and drama.
Thus, we discovered that, among foreign works broadcast (excluding local productions) on foreign linear channels in 2024, France ranked third among the producer countries. Behind the United States and the United Kingdom, and far ahead of its European neighbors, France was the most represented non-English-speaking country. The majority of French works were successfully exported beyond our borders: a total of 4,692 distinct French productions were broadcast on foreign television channels in 2024. Mainly consisting of series, animation accounted for three-quarters of French broadcasts, while drama made up half of the titles on offer, followed by documentaries. French television programs and films were the most numerous and most widely available on the most distinct channels in Spain, ahead of Poland and Canada, which was very close to Germany. In the above-mentioned countries (excluding Canada) and in the Czech Republic, they accounted for more than 10% of first broadcasts of foreign works. Outside Europe, Canada and Brazil were the most Francophile markets in the sample of 14 foreign countries studied. Finally, Česká televize was the foreign public broadcaster presenting the most French works.
When it came to SVOD platforms, as is the case with linear television channels, the United States took the lion's share, behind more than a third of foreign content and nearly half of new foreign releases (excluding local productions). The United Kingdom, Japan, India, and South Korea were the other largest providers of content to these platforms. France ranked fifth and stood out as the leading non-English-speaking European country in terms of the number of new foreign releases in 2024. The supply of films and one-off programs exceeded that of series, with a volume of launches heavily favoring the former over the latter. Drama was the dominant genre, while documentaries outnumbered animation. Europe was the leading region for the international release of French productions in 2024. While the western part of the continent prevailed in terms of numbers, the eastern part dominated in terms of presence. Asia was the leading non-European geographical area in terms of the former criterion, while Africa led in terms of the latter. The country rankings (in terms of number and share) put Poland in the lead, followed by Germany. The sample of foreign SVOD platforms that acquire and broadcast French works is highly diverse, comprising American streaming giants, niche and thematic platforms, and online services from traditional linear television channels and telephone operators. And in 23 of them, France accounted for more than 10% of new foreign releases in 2024.
