As in recent years, French animation remains a privileged ambassador for French film production internationally, particularly in distant or less Francophile geographical areas. The multi-award-winning French-Latvian production Flow was the most-watched French title on the big screen across five continents at the end of August 2025! More than 8 million children and adults fell under the spell of the black cat, more than half of whom were from Latin American countries: 2.2 million in Mexico (Canibal, €6.8 million in box office revenues), 421,000 in Brazil (Mares, €1.4 million), 357,000 in Chile (BF, €1.4 million), 330,000 in Colombia (Cineplex, €0.9 million), 315,000 in Peru (BF, €0.9 million), and 262,000 in Argentina (BF, €1.1 million). In the rest of the world, Flow also attracted 676,000 viewers in China (China Film, €3.6 million), 294,000 in the United Kingdom & Ireland (Curzon, €2.7 million), and 294,000 in Germany (MFA+, €2.5 million).
Mexico stood out as the leading market in terms of audience numbers for French films. In addition to the aforementioned Flow, the list of locally popular animated films also includes Pets on a Train, which sold 180,000 tickets (Corazón, €0.4 million), and Argonuts, which sold 135,000 tickets (Zima, €0.5 million). These two examples illustrate the dual nature of French animation: on the one hand, new releases that debut outside France; on the other, titles that continue their international tour over several years. The first group, along with Pets on a Train, includes the minority-French film Night of the Zoopocalypse, which has grossed nearly $2 million in the United States and English-speaking Canada (Viva, 167,000 admissions) and attracted 133,000 Russians (Atmosfera, €0.4m) and 75,000 Ukrainians (UFD, €0.3m). The second group includes the eight other films in the top 10. 66,000 Spaniards flocked to Panda Bear in Africa (Vercine, €0.4 million), 57,000 Japanese discovered Robot Dreams (The Klockworx, €0.6 million), and 35,000 Italians opted for The Inseparables, three minority-French productions. The hit of 2023, Ladybug & Cat Noir Awakening, opened in Bulgaria and thrilled 41,000 viewers (Pro, €0.2 million), while Into the Wonderwoods sold 50,000 tickets in Vietnam (Skyline, €0.2 million) and more than 10,000 in Serbia & Montenegro (MegaCom, €0.04 million). In the latter market, the film rose to the top of the French releases of 2025! Finally, we must commend the wide distribution enjoyed by The Most Precious of Cargoes, which arrived in some thirty foreign countries.
Even if they didn't make it into the top 10 above, other new French animated films have been exported since the beginning of the year, such as Little Amélie or the Character of Rain and minority-French productions Hola Frida, La Vie, en gros, Sauvages, and Slocum et moi.
