The major SVOD platforms continue to deploy hybrid models. These may allow for greater transparency of their consumption data. Meanwhile, the contraction of the subscription video-on-demand market continues. The AVOD and FAST platforms, presented as the new El Dorado, nevertheless raise many questions, especially about the profitability of their models.
This twelfth edition of our Digital Market News Bulletin, reserved for Unifrance members, takes a look at events in the global digital distribution market in the months of September, October, and November, 2022.
Changes in the SVOD market are accelerating. If the craze for AVOD and FAST channels is present to compensate for the current tensions, many questions remain. The profitability per user is indeed lower. The saturation of titles on offer is further aggravated by this multiplication of services, especially since some FAST channels are also launching into the production of original content.
Overall, investments in original productions, especially local ones, continue, but the question of how to promote them has never been so important. Few local productions have achieved the success of Money Heist. Some, notably David Zaslav, General Manager of Warner Bros. Discovery, are thinking of breaking with the principle of exclusive broadcasting in order to emphasize a better profitability of content.
Finally, the arrival of hybrid offers from global platforms could mark the beginning of transparency with regard to their streaming statistics and information. Initiatives in this direction are multiplying.
