On Wednesday November 30, the French Film Market, organized by Unifrance, opened in Tokyo as a prelude to the 30th French Film Festival in Yokohama, after three years without professional meetings, as Japan has just reopened its borders to foreigners. The market will continue until Thursday December 1.
The 2022 edition of the market welcomes 22 sales companies in a redesigned format, in the heart of the Shibuya district, where many independent movie theaters attract Tokyo's film fans. Japanese distributors, eager to reconnect face to face with exporters, are expected to attend in large numbers.
Alice Damiani from Newen Connect - a TF1 Group Company is enthusiastic: "We're delighted to see distributors again, especially those with whom we had slightly lost contact. Some haven't yet started attending international markets, so it makes a difference to see them, to go to their offices, to spend quality time with them. There are newcomers to the scene and still as many companies wanting to distribute our films."
Yohann Comte from Charadess confirms this enthusiasm. "We're obviously very happy to be back in Japan. Many Japanese distributors haven't traveled for three years and are therefore delighted that we're bringing a little bit of France back to them. They are looking for new French talents and voices with which to entice audiences back to theaters."
On the Japanese side, Chiaki Omori from Shôchiku adds: "We're very happy to be physically present in the French market after these three years. The venue is pleasant and easy to get to, and it's great to meet people in person, not only French sellers but also other Japanese buyers - we couldn't run into each other or have real discussions in a virtual market! Thanks to Unifrance for making this possible."
And Chizu Ogiya from Gaga Corporation concludes: "It's so nice to be part of all this activity again and to see the faces of our longstanding friends at the French Film Market in Tokyo."
From Thursday, the event will continue in Yokohama with the opening of the French Film Festival in Japan.
