The twelfth edition of the Rendez-vous with New French Cinema in Rome, the festival initiated by the Ambassade de France in Italy and organized by the Institut Français in collaboration with Unifrance, will take place from March 30 through April 4, 2022, in the presence of many guests and, as always, in the mythical Nuovo Sacher theater, Nanni Moretti's cinema. The festival will also tour to Bologna, Turin, and Naples.
The program for this 2022 edition includes sixteen recently produced French films, accompanied by an artistic delegation (directors, actresses, and actors) who will come to interact with the public. The following are expected to attend: Antoine Barraud, Stéphane Brizé, Laurent Cantet, Emmanuel Carrère, Arnaud Desplechin, Emmanuelle Devos, Mikhaël Hers, Sandrine Kiberlain, and Claire Simon.
Emmanuel Carrère's Between Two Worlds will open the festival, in the director's presence, on March 30. Christian Masset, the French Ambassador in Italy, along with Serge Toubiana, Daniela Elstner, and Gilles Renouard, for Unifrance, will also be present at the opening night, which will be followed by a gala evening at the Ambassade de France in Italy, in the sumptuous Farnese Palace.
This edition highlights "art cinema outsiders," celebrating iconic filmmakers but who have had atypical career paths, and who stand out by a singular and very personal style. Well-known directors who have made a name for themselves in French cinema.
Kiberlain Focus
This edition's Focus is dedicated to Sandrine Kiberlain, one of French cinema's most shape-shifting performers, with the presentation of the films Another World by Stéphane Brizé, Violette by Martin Provost, and A Radiant Girl, her debut feature as a director. A Q&A is scheduled after the latter film's screening at the Cinema Nuovo Sacher.
The festival will continue jointly at the Cineteca in Bologna, Cinema Massimo in Turin, and the Institut Français in Naples.
Rendez-Vous on MYmovies
In addition to the physical screenings, the festival invites Italian film lovers to MYmovies.it. From March 30 through April 4 on the platform, they will be able to discover several films from the 2022 selection. Accessible from all over Italy on mymovies.it, these virtual screenings are limited to 500 spectators per session. First come, first served!
Prix France 24
The Prix France 24, awarded each year to one of the films in the selection in recognition of cinema of commitment and disseminating information, will be given to The Crossing by Florence Miailhe.
Unifrance-ANICA professional meeting
Several Italian producers will speak about the themes of production and the state of distribution and exhibition in Italy, particularly with regard to the issues generated by the insufficient numbers of people returning to theaters.
After these presentations, a dialogue and exchange of experiences will take place with a delegation of French professionals present.
All practical information can be found on the website of the Institut Français Italia. The program (in Italian) is attached to this article and can be downloaded below.
