In 2021, French films attracted 14.8 million viewers and generated 91.4 million euros in international box office revenues. Despite another difficult year, the box office remained stable compared to 2020 and French cinema maintained its place in theaters, at festivals, and on SVOD platforms internationally.
FIGURES AND KEY INFORMATION
- 14.8* million admissions for French productions (compared to 13.7 million in 2020, i.e. +8%* compared to the provisional figure for 2020 announced in January 2021) / Note: in France, French films generated 39.2** million admissions in 2021, i.e. +34.2%** compared to 2020
- 91.4* million euros in box office revenues for French productions (compared to 86.6 million in 2020, i.e. +5.5%* compared to the provisional figure for 2020 announced in January 2021)
- 7.3* million admissions (i.e. 49.5%* of the total) for majority-French productions (compared to 9.5 million and 69.5% in January 2021, i.e. -23,2 %*)
- 7.4* million admissions (i.e. 50.3%* of the total) for French-language films (compared to 10.6 million and 77.6% in January 2021, i.e. -30,2 %*)
- 719* French films exhibited (compared to 611 in January 2021, i.e. +17,7%*)
- 1,527* releases of French films (compared to 1,398 in January 2021, i.e. +9,2%*)
- 2* French films attracted more than 1 million foreign filmgoers and 24* more than 100,000 (compared to 2 and 28 respectively in January 2021, i.e. 0 and -4)
- China became the leading territory in terms of audience for French films in 2021, ahead of Russia and Spain*
- 202 French films were selected in10 major international festivals*** and represented 21.7% of titles presented (compared to 163 and 19.5% respectively in 2020, or +23.9%)
- Nearly 2,900 French films were present in international SVOD platform catalogs and represented 4.8% of the global offer (compared to approximately 2,700 and 3.5% respectively in 2020, i.e. +7.4%)
