For the third consecutive year, Unifrance has released a cutting-edge study analyzing the presence of French films on 81 SVOD platforms in 48 market regions in July 2021. In addition to the macroeconomic analysis, detailed fact sheets are also provided on 21 territories and 31 platforms.
In a market landscape that is constantly evolving and expanding, French films occupy an increasingly strong position. In three years, the presence of French productions on SVOD platforms around the world rose by 2.4% in 2019 à 3.5% in 2020, and 4.8% in 2021. The dual increase in the supply of operators and the number of titles acquired has unquestionably benefited French cinema. On one side, the more established platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video have upped their acquisitions of French content and, at the same time, their market share increases yearly. On the other side, localized platforms, which are gaining strength, are becoming less oriented to American films, and offer a larger share of their catalogs to French productions, even if the market share of these services is lower in terms of the number of titles acquired.
The trend is therefore a positive one, and the growth potential is significant. Indeed, by accounting for 4.8% of catalogs, French films have jumped to 3rd place among national industries represented on SVOD platforms, behind the USA and India, moving up one spot since 2020. We can compare this figure to that of the presence of French films in international theaters, which stands at 9.9%. French films are thus currently twice as well represented in theaters than on SVOD platforms.
