For the second consecutive year, Unifrance releases a new study, analysing the presence of French films on 69 SVOD platforms in 48 market regions in July 2020. In addition to the macroeconomic analysis, detailed fact sheets are also provided on 28 territories and 26 platforms.
The trend is gradual but real on global platforms, with French films increasing from 2.3% to 2.8% on Netflix and from 1.8 % to 3.0 % on Prime Video, while they occupy 4.8% of listings on HBO Max in the United States. Compared to last year, it is also interesting to note that the gap between the presence of French films on regional and global platforms has increased. On average, one out of twenty films on a local platform is French, which again conveys the work carried out by distributors and is certainly a repercussion of all-rights exhibition.
The position of French films on platforms is constantly evolving. It seems to be consolidating and taking advantage of the emergence of local actors who are more open to diversified cinema. It is still a little early to draw definitive conclusions, but this emerging trend makes it possible to consider online platforms with more optimism than last year.
