Les Sandales blanches
Synopsis
In the early 1960s, in the Algerian slum of Nanterre. Malika is five years old. Her mother has just bought her a new pair of sandals. The sandals are so white that the little girl can’t take her eyes off them and doesn’t see the truck backing up. This marks the beginning of years spent in the hospital, undergoing repeated surgeries, suffering, and struggling. Years away from her family, during which the young Muslim girl, in the care of Catholic nuns and nurses, discovers music and singing while attending Mass. From then on, facing the racism of a French society still struggling to recover from the Algerian War, but also coming up against the deep-seated prejudices of her own community, Malika would pursue her dream and move mountains to become the one whom everyone would one day call “the Diva of the Suburbs.”
