Synopsis
Petition is a unique testimony to today's China. Since 1996, Zhao Liang has been filming "petitioners" from all over China bringing complaints to Beijing against the abuses and injustices of local authorities. Gathered near the complaints offices, most of them living in makeshift shelters, the complainants wait months or even years for justice. Faced with the most brutal intimidation from the local authorities, complainants who persist in spite of everything, often hope in vain. Zhao Liang accompanied several of them, in particular a mother and daughter whose story we follow over ten years. A film shot right up to the dawn of the Olympic Games, showing the persistent contradictions of a China in the throes of economic expansion.
