A Shadow at the Window

A Shadow at the Window

A Feature film by Jean-François Goujon

Produced by Chemin Production

Production year : 2009

For 16-year-old Chantal, 1962 is going along pretty smoothly.

It's true she's an orphan, but she doesn't suffer because of it. She never knew her father, a hero who died from war injuries just after her birth. She barely knew her mother, who died when she was six. However, she was raised in a loving environment by her maternal grandparents. A pretty girl, the boys like her, and her intelligence destines her to take over from her grandfather, a pharmacist in Angers. She's also passionate about music and is studying the violin.

So all is going along just fine... until the ball on Saturday July 14, 1962 at St Georges sur mer, near St Nazaire, where she usually spends summer vacation with her grandparents. At the ball, she gets into an argument with some other girls, one of whom says Chantal is "illegitimate." The worst thing is that, although embarrassed by the outburst, no one denies it. Chantal is devastated: she's been told lies all these years.

She's now only got one thing on her mind: to find her father, about whom she knows virtually nothing except vague indications about the men who crossed paths with her mother... "a priest, an Arab, an SS officer," as Madame Lebrun would say, and "a shadow in the window." Chantal withdraws into the world of music. In it she discovers love thanks to Romuald, who will help her in her search.
