Synopsis
The stage production was a challenge; the film was another kind of challenge. With these productions, the Théâtre du Soleil has delved, body and soul, into one of the crucial problems of the 21st century, namely that of “human migration.” It was capable of lending an ear to hear the voices of these refugees and, through the timbre and tessitura, sharing with us their past, their present, their dreams, and their fears – all that which politicians and the media confiscates from them, and from us. With these refugees, the theater invented a new form that, because of the urgent need to tell this tale, intertwined documents and fictions. Through film, the characters are even closer to the audience, cinema fired by a theatrical inspiration: In this new creation, Ariane Mnouchkine rethinks stage narrative and the actors’ craft takes on a powerful new force.
