“Boesman & Lena” attempts to describe the life of a couple caught between passion and habit. Outside the social conditions depicted in the film, the experience it describes is a universal one. The story’s setting is nature at its most primitive. Earth, water, air and fire are an integral part of Boesman and Lena’s existence: the four elements supply an essential backdrop against which their drama unfolds. All that we can hope for from life is courage, dignity, and maybe a certain kind of love mixed with anxiety and suffering. The film’s aim is to allow us feel this hope. It should also give a meaning to our confusing battles. We struggle, stumble through the chaos of our existence, fight to find lucidity, even if it be minimal and fleeting. A sense of worth and exaltation comes to whoever engages in this struggle , and it gives a certain meaning to existence. My most precious desire is to express all this with a crazy passion and a luminous clarity.” – John Berry.
