After his first film “Une vallée contre un empire” (1981) contributed to the legend of the “Lion of Panjshir”, Christophe de Ponfilly formed a friendship with Commandant Massud. In 1997, he returned to Afghanistan to join Massud while he prepared his attack against the Taliban. The film that ensued is a fascinating portrait of this charismatic figure of the Afghan resistance at a moment when he is preparing himself for his final battle. Throughout the documentary, intercut with extracts from his previous films, Christophe de Ponfilly constantly questions his approach to filmmaking. The result is a moving journey that brings us close to both Massud and the filmmaker himself.
