October 7, 1999. Carole leaves her boyfriend. Out on the street, it is rainy and dark. Her first reaction is to jump into a cab. Where to ? Anywhere. The center of town. The cabbie watches his fare in the rear-view mirror. He is impassive, has seen it all. Carole weeps. She doesn't have any money, has forgotten her computerized identity card. During the nocturnal wanderings of Carole and the cabbie, it becomes apparent how much life has changed. It is essential to have an identity card at all times. It is also essential to have an home, a job, a well-placed connection. Society has solved a whole range of problems by imposing mandatory work, by deporting immigrants, by imposing a curfew. A police state mentality. Once caught in the cogs of police mistrust and mistakes, the night quickly becomes a nightmare...
