Synopsis
June 14, 1934. It’s autumn, but the heat lingers and shows no signs of abating. In an isolated region in Paraguay, Candida and Ramon, an elderly farming couple, wait for their son to return from the frontlines of the Chaco war. They’re also waiting for rain (that is imminent but never arrives), wind (that doesn’t blow), for the heat to subside (but it continues although it’s not the right season), for the dog to stop barking (it doesn’t); in short, they’re waiting for better times. Between what was and what will happen next there is this moment of eternal waiting. Each deals with the situation differently: Ramon, the father, faces the wait with optimism; Candida is convinced that her son is dead and that this waiting is useless. The roles are reversed while the couple waits: each receives a signal from their son that will make them change their attitude and position.
