BiographyAfter studying fine arts in Orléans, Agnès Merlet went to IDHEC film school in Paris and made two short films: "La Guerre des pâtes" and "Poussières d' étoiles" (which won the Jean Vigo Award and the Press Prize at Clermont-Ferrand). She also directed several music videos, notably for Jean-Louis Murat and Les Innocents. But she has also made many numerous documentaries. completed her first feature in 1994. Marked by irresistible lyricism, "Son the Shark" recounts the headlong flight of two delinquent brothers, and won the Grand Prize for Best Screenplay (1992), the International Critics' Award in Venice (1994) and a Felix for Best Film by a Young Film-maker (1995). Back in art school, Merlet had been fascinated by Artemisia Gentileschi's painting of Judith Beheading Holophernes. The subject gestated for a long time before emerging as her second feature, "Artemisia," which the director describes as "the story of a double initiation—into the art of painting and the art of loving." The film notably features Michel Serrault. "Artémisia" was nominated for the Golden Globe Awards in 1998 and Agnès Merlet is currently preparing her third feature.
