An enormous, transforming market in the process of opening up.
After a rather morose 2009, due to the combined effects of the world economic crisis and a strike at multiplexes, Indian cinema seems to have rebounded on a growth cycle at the same level, if not higher, as in previous years. 2009 marked a 14% regression of revenues throughout the whole cinema sector, despite the record admissions for the Hindi film 3 Idiots and, remarkably, James Cameron's Avatar, the first foreign film to reach the top of the Indian box office. Market observers today assess the possible growth of the media and entertainment sector as a whole at 13% per annum from now until 2014. The film industry in India was valued at around 1.44 billion euros in 2009, a figure that is expected to reach 1.56 billion in 2010.
