Distributed by Filmladen in Austria in a 30-print release, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s film attracted audiences numbering 20,000 in its opening weekend. “Asterix and Obelix” was the last French film to have achieved similar startling results.
After charming Germany, where, in the sixth week of its run, the film retains sixth place at the box office, Amelie has seduced the Austrians. Opening to 20,000 admissions, the film’s distributor expects this to climb to 30,000 by the end of the first week. French films rarely achieve results of this sort even at the end of their run! Filmladen hopes to reach 150,000 admissions in all.
