The 2005 Renault French Film Season gears up (March 30 - April 1)

For the third year running, the Institut Français and Unifrance, in cooperation with UGC Cinemas and with the valued participation of Renault, have joined forces to present a season of French films in the United Kingdom. Kristin Scott Thomas leads the delegation traveling to London for the launch of the event.

Four films will be showcased at the event this year, selected in close collaboration with distributors, all of which are slated for release in the UK in 2005. The Renault French Film Season is an initiative aiming to promote these releases, giving audiences across the UK an opportunity to experience and enjoy four new French films, and to throw a spotlight on French cinema in a wider sense.

This year's Season will be launched on March 30 in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and on March 31 and April 1st in London. A delegation of actors and directors from the four films will be in attendance: Kristin Scott Thomas, Jean-Paul Salomé, Eléonore Faucher, Lola Naymark, Maggie Cheung, Olivier Assayas, Arnaud Desplechin and Emmanuelle Devos. The following films will be presented :
- "Brodeuses" ("A Common Thread") directed by Eléonore Faucher (Cannes Critics' Week Winner 2004 - released by Soda Pictures on May 20)
- "Rois et reine" ("Kings and Queen") directed by Arnaud Desplechin (Winner Best Actor - Cesar Awards 2004, released by Artificial Eye on June 17)
- "Clean" directed by Olivier Assayas (released by Vertigo Films on July 15)
- "Arsene Lupin" directed by Jean-Paul Salome (released by Cinefile on September 9)

Frederic Lavigne, Deputy Director of the Institut Français, comments: "We are delighted that this year's Renault French Film Season features four such varied films, a testimony to the diversity and dynamism of contemporary French cinema. Each film will be premiered in London and Scotland in the presence of its director and lead. We are very proud of our ongoing support of independent distributors who are releasing these films throughout the UK."

The wider objective of the Season is to encourage UK audiences to be receptive to French cinema, and to this end, the Institut Français, Unifrance and UGC Cinemas regularly support the work of British distributors in releasing French films. Their aims are to promote the great diversity of French cinema, positioning it not only as a source of enjoyment, but equally as a means of promoting debate and ideas beyond the more familiar Multiplex product.

Philippe Talou-Derible, Managing Director of Renault UK adds: "I am delighted that Renault is once again sponsoring the French Film Season, the bold, innovative qualities of which so closely match our own."

Kate Cox, Film Marketing Manager of UGC Cinemas, also commented: "UGC are delighted to be supporting the Renault French Film Season for the third year running. Interest in French, and foreign language film generally, in the UK continues to grow year on year. Initiatives such as the Season are key to driving awareness of and accessibility to these films, and UGC are pleased to play a part."
