With already a million spectators tallied internationally, Nicolas Bedos's comedy, produced by Les Films du Kiosque and exported by Pathé Films, is one of the most popular recent French films among foreign cinephiles.
Since the beginning of November 2019, La Belle Epoque has released in more than 40 territories and charmed a million spectators outside France, generating a box-office of €6.67 million.
Coinciding with its French theatrical release, the film began its long international tour in Italy, where, buoyed by a hugely successful launch, it saw a 20% increase in admissions during its second week. This could be attributed to the doubling of screens and positive word-of-mouth. Its transalpine career ended with 268,000 spectators and €1.63 million in box office revenues.
During the first two weeks of release in Belgium, La Belle Époque achieved best average per print in the local rankings for a total of 60,000 tickets sold (€0.5 million), a few thousand more than in neighboring The Netherlands (56,500). Nicolas Bedos's film then passed the 100,000 admissions mark in Germany and the 50,000 mark in Poland, one that it just missed in Russia, where it was launched in over 200 theaters. The film also managed to make a place for itself in two English-speaking markets, Australia and the United Kingdom, where it garnered respectively AU$557,000 (39,000 spectators) and £175,000 (24,000) in box office revenues.
At the end of May 2020, when theaters were closed in most countries, La Belle Époque was presented on 460 South Korean screens and climbed to second place in the country's top ten titles. At the end of the summer, the film had sold 66,000 tickets and earned €0.4 million at the box office. Also in Asia, the film took third place in the Taiwanese rankings and attracted more than 10,000 spectators. In Mexico, it was the most popular title during the last Tour de ciné francés, which launched it in nearly 100 theaters and generated a provisional total of 34,000 tickets sold.
And its tour is not over yet: on June 6, Japanese spectators will get their turn to discover the film!
La Belle Époque has been added to the list of French-language fiction productions that have attracted more than a million viewers abroad recently, after Serial Bad Weddings 2 (3.69 million), Portrait of a Lady on Fire (1.56 million), and An Officer and a Spy (1.42 million).
We note that Nicolas Bedos's comedy racked up a total of 1.29 million admissions in France (distributed by Pathé Films and Orange Studio). Unveiled out of competition at the 72nd Festival de Cannes, it won 3 Césars, including Best Supporting Actress, awarded to Fanny Ardant.
