Synopsis
This film traces the history of freedom of thought in France from the time of the Ancien Régime to today, told through the story of the trial of the Chevalier de la Barre, who was executed in 1766 because he did not salute a procession, and the battle fought by his defenders to free him. In this documentary, the ghost of the Chevalier returns to haunt the major scenes of this historical drama, resulting in an art film that follows the crossing paths of the sculptor and foundry worker who created the statue of the Chevalier and the composers of the film’s original score performed by the Orchestra of Picardy.
