Synopsis
The Davos World Economic Forum exists since 1971. Its official aim is to “bring governments and business interests together to face the challenges that humanity will face in the 21st century.”
In January 2001, coinciding with the Forum’s dates, the First World Social Forum of Porto Alegre took place in Brazil. Organizations for landless farmers, groups fighting for the abolition of debt for the world’s most impoverished countries, unions, along with politicians and researchers, came from more than 120 countries to reflect upon ‘building a society centered on the human person.” The aim was not to “object” but to reach a more constructive level of debate to bring about change in the world.
