Synopsis
In the dry forest of northwest Peru, after decades of extensive deforestation and mining, a farming community of 500 families decided to declare itself an "ecological community," transforming these former hunting grounds into a nature reserve where threatened species, such as the spectacled bear and the Andean condor, were reintroduced and protected. Revenues from the reserve allow the community to improve living conditions and finance education and health services in their various hamlets. Today, the "comuneros" continue to meet with other north Peruvian communities, sometimes during their daring rescue operations for bears, reaching as far as the Amazonian Andes as they pursue their goal of creating a vast ecological corridor entirely managed by local populations.
