UniFrance Films box office report: Love (Amour) shifts into high gear.
The number of prints of Love (Amour) released in the USA/English-speaking Canada increased once again this week (Sony Classics), raised from 36 to 67 prints. The film took an additional $657,000 in North American theaters (around 88,000 admissions), with box office takings hitting just under $2 million (263,000 admissions) since its release seven weeks ago.
Also showing in Spain (Golem), Love is currently released on 64 prints, after four weeks in theaters. It now tallies 133,000 admissions, which is a strong performance for an auteur film in this market, although it is unlikely to outscore the results of The White Ribbon (Golem), which attracted 283,000 spectators in Spain in 2010.
Love currently boasts a total of almost 1.6 million admissions in international theaters.
Rust & Bone has crossed the 100,000 admissions threshold in Germany (Wild Bunch) after four weeks. It looks set to reach 140,000 admissions by the end of its run, thus matching the performance of Romantics Anonymous (DCM – 141,000 admissions in 2011), When Pigs Have Wings (Alamode - 144,000 admissions in 2012), and The Chef (Senator – 145,000 admissions in 2012).
After an unimpressive performance last week in the United States/English-speaking Canada (Sony Classics), Rust & Bone saw its release cut back to 52 prints, resulting in a 47% drop in ticket sales. With currently close to $1.8 million to its credit in North America (around 230,000 admissions), it has now entered into its tenth week, and will soon reach the end of its run. In Quebec (Metropole Films), it has achieved results equivalent to those of A Prophet (Metropole Films), with 47,000 registered in seven weeks.
Rust & Bone has attracted a total of 950,000 admissions to date in theaters outside France.
Capital has put in a fine performance in Greece (Odeon), the director Costa-Gavras's homeland. It has pulled in 27,000 admissions in just three weeks, rivaling the final results of Habemus Papam (Seven Films – 27,000 admissions in five weeks in 2011) and Coco Before Chanel (Audiovisual Enterprises – 28,000 admissions in six weeks in 2010). The film is nonetheless unlikely to outshine the excellent results of the director's previous hit, Eden is West (Odeon), which finished its run with 82,000 admissions in Greece in 2009.
Capital has also won over Spanish audiences (Savor), registering over 140,000 spectators in ten weeks. This ranks as the most successful Costa-Gavras film in this market since Amen (Wanda), which in 2003 achieved the 5th highest results registered by a French film in Spain, with 176,000 admissions.
Capital posts a running total of just under 190,000 admissions abroad.
