UniFrance box office report: Love joins the Oscar race.
Love maintains its high performances, raking in an additional sum of over $120,000 at the American box office this week (around 15,000 admissions), with three prints in circulation. Its win at the Golden Globes and the promotional campaign orchestrated by the film's US distributor Sony in the lead-up to the Academy Awards should allow the film to outshine the performance of the previous Palme d’Or winner by the same director, Michael Haneke, The White Ribbon, which ended its North American run with $2.2 million to its credit (for 302,000 admissions).
In the Netherlands (where it is released by Cinéart), Love attracted 122,000 spectators after seven weeks, ranking as the highest admissions score for a Michael Haneke film in this market since the early 2000s.
Love currently boasts a total of over 1 million spectators abroad.
Rust & Bone took an additional $230,000 this week in the USA (Sony), with a per-print average of just under $9,000. The film's results have been satisfactory at this stage, although its appeal to American audiences appears limited, with a low $700,000 registered after six weeks on the screens (for around 90,000 admissions). The number of prints released will be upped from 39 to 79 next week–a week that will prove decisive for the future of the film in North America.
Also currently showing in Quebec (Metropole), Rust & Bone has pulled in over 13,000 spectators in three weeks, with 3 prints released. This is a good performance which should further improve in coming weeks due to a planned increase in the number of prints circulated. Finally, the film's release in Spain (Vertigo) has registered 54,000 admissions after four weeks, with results likely to match those of director Jacques Audiard's previous film, A Prophet (Alta Films–74,000 admissions, released in 2010), before the end of January.
