The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival was held July 1 through 9, 2011. Presented in the Official Competition, Ni à vendre, ni à louer picked up the Best Direction award.
This year, Unifrance hosted its annual evening party during the festival, held in the presence of the French Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Pierre Lévy, and gathering together journalists, sales agents, distributors, festival programmers, and artists. Guests included Pascal Rabaté and Xavier Delmas, the director and producer of Ni à vendre, ni à louer, along with David Dusa, director of Flowers of Evil (which was selected by Variety magazine in its Critics' Choice section).
2011 marks the first year for the festival with its young new director Karel Och, replacing Eva Zaoralova, who remains as artistic consultant to the event. The Karlovy Vary festival has always been popular with audiences, offering high quality screenings and an efficiently organized event. In terms of figures, 31 French films (including 19 French-language titles) were released on Czech screens in 2010, which, along with titles released the previous year still showing in 2010, attracted close to 290,000 spectators. By contrast, 2011 has got off to a slow start for French films in this market, with just 5 new films released. The outlook for the second six months of the year looks more promising.
