In the wake of the controversy sparked by the film by Gaspard Noé on the Croisette, here are the first details of its release on the international circuit.
In French-speaking Switzerland, the film is distributed by Frenetic Films and has registered over 10,000 admissions after its first two weeks on the screens. 7 prints have been distributed, including 2 in Geneva and 1 in Lausanne. The film's distributor could have hoped for better results but is nonetheless satisfied with achieving third place at the box office. As for the reaction from the press, reflecting the response to the film during the Cannes Festival, numerous articles have been devoted to the film, expressing divided views.
In Italy, the film has also been in theaters since May 24. Bim Distribuzione has pulled out all the stops
to offer the film a large-scale release, with162 prints in circulation. The film hit third place at the local box office from opening week, behind "Star Wars" (released the previous week) and "The Mothman Prophecies." At the close of its second week, the film slipped back only one place at the box office and has already clocked up 140,000 admissions.
"Irreversible" is soon to be released in two other French-speaking territories, Belgium and Quebec.
