Television programs are confirming their status as a driving force for the export of French animations. This observation is echoed in articles published in two magazines recently on this subject.
The article by Ben Croll in Variety, titled "Animated Series Are Growing Export for French Producers" and the article by Romina Rodriguez in Señal News, "French Animation, a global power in a very challenging business," sing the praises of French animated programs and the professionals who produce and sell them in international markets.
Among the French professionals interviewed for these articles are many Unifrance members, including Corinne Kouper from TeamTO, Raphaële Mathieu from Cyber Group Studios, Morgann Favennec from Xilam Animation, Mélanie Errea from MIAM ! Animation, and Sophie Audouin-Mamikonian from Princess SAM Pictures.
Both writers of the articles agree that French productions have a chance to shine in an industry where demand for content is high and competition is fierce. The advantage France holds is the expertise of its animation industry players, who have longstanding experience in seeking sources for funding outside France, and who have successfully adapted to the new challenges brought by the digital era (notably thanks to a strengthened online presence, such as on YouTube).
According to the writers, the strength of French TV animations, particularly for shows aimed at very young audiences, lies in the high quality of the scriptwriting, as well as the camera work and the interesting themes explored (such as ecology, social tolerance, inclusion). They also note that French professionals pay close attention to the messages expressed by their content, with a concern for ensuring an educational impact, while remaining entertaining for young viewers.
Both writers consider that the French animation industry is a key growth sector that benefits from the high demand for content for young audiences and/or educational subjects, which has notably emanated from American online platforms since the start of the pandemic.
