While French films represent just 4.8% of the catalog of SVOD platforms around the world in 2021, non-English language content overall accounts for a growing percentage of platforms' investment. A first move toward transparency in their data on consumption also appears to be underway as they seek to capitalize on the global success of their original local productions.
This seventh edition of our Digital Market News Bulletin, which is reserved for Unifrance members, focuses on events in the digital distribution market in September and October 2021.
The publication by UniFrance of data on the position of French films on subscription video-on-demand services in 2021 coincides with a time in which platforms are pursuing and strengthening their policy of enhanced localization of content. With a fierce competition for content, global platforms—led by Netflix—are now seeking to highlight the success of their original productions amidst a veritable battle of statistics. At the same time, the proliferation of new platforms and increased growth in the market add to the sense of urgency on the part of government authorities to regulate the VOD sector.
