After its two BAFTA awards and Golden Globes nominations, The Father, the debut feature by Florian Zeller, coproduced by France, won two Oscars (out of its six nominations) at the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, which took place on April 25, 2021.
Florian Zeller is already the most performed contemporary French playwright internationally, and The Father, his very first feature film, an adaptation of his eponymous play, won two Oscars at the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony:: Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton.
A terrific way for the young director to launch his cinema career, the film was coproduced for France by Philippe Carcassonne (Ciné-@), Jean-Louis Livi (F comme Film), Christophe Spadone (Films du Cru), and Orange Studio. Florian Zeller is currently working on the adaptation of his plays, including The Son, also coproduced by France, which should be shot this summer in New York with Laura Dern and Hugh Jackman.
French talents continue to export well to Hollywood, and we also hail the Best Documentary (Short Subject) Oscar awarded to Colette, produced in the United States by French film producer Alice Doyard, as well as Best Sound awarded to French sound engineer Nicolas Becker (as well as to his colleagues Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc, Carlos Cortés, and Phillip Bladh) for Sound of Metal, whose subject is precisely the importance of sound in the life of a musician who loses his hearing.
