Costa Gavras received the first Donostia Award presented at this year's 67th San Sebastián International Film Festival. The festival's highest distinction, the Donostia Award honors the filmmaker for his commitment to addressing social and political issues in his films.
On Saturday, September 21, Costa Gavras received the Donostia Award, accompanied by his wife, the producer Michèle Ray Gavras, and the crew from his latest film, Adults in the Room (which was shown in San Sebastián in a special screening). The award was presented just before the screening of the film.
The festival's artistic director José Luis Rebordinos stated that Costa-Gavras has always defended the idea that all cinema is political, and went on to highlight his "cinematic precision" and "determination to address what is going on in the society in which we live today," concluding that the "director analyzes power, and speaks out for the people that power oppresses and tries to make invisible. It's an honor to give this political award to a director like Costa-Gavras."
In his acceptance speech, Costa-Gavras said, "It is a great honor for me to receive this award, which is so precious to us as filmmakers."
